The inception of the Mechanical Engineering Department may be traced back to 1921 when a diploma course in Mechanical Engineering was started in this Institute. The first degree course in Mechanical Engineering was started from 18th July, 1930. Moving through a few decades, the Department of Mechanical Engineering consolidated to its present condition offering 8-Semester Undergraduate Courses with an approximate intake of 65 students annually and 3-Semester Postgraduate Courses with an intake of 22 students annually.

The Department provides ample laboratory facilities and hands-on training to the Undergraduate students both in the conventional subject as also in the emerging fields of specialization

Of these laboratories, Sl. Nos (i) to (viii) serve the purpose of training the students in the conventional and basic course of Mechanical Engineering; while laboratories Sl. Nos. (ix) to (xvi) are organized to provide hands-on training to the students in the emerging field of specialization. Each theoretical course is backed by sufficient laboratory experiments. The undergraduate students of this department may well claim the honour of being trained in the most sophisticated and state-of art laboratories available at the present moment in our country.

The Department is mainly backed by Applied Mechanics Department which caters subjects like, Strength of Materials, Fluid Mechanics, Dynamics of Machinery, Engineering Mechanics & drawing. It is also backed by the Central Workshop facilities for providing hands-on training in the conventional machining and other traditional trades like Smithy, Forging, Welding, Foundry and Pattern Making. A Stream Power Laboratory is also being used for training the departmental students.

The department also takes different theory classes and conducts laboratory experiments for other branches of Engineering viz. Electrical Engineering, Electronics & communication Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science & Technology, Metallurgy and Mining Engineering.

Regulars three semesters Postgraduate Courses are offered by the Department for regular students and for a few industry-sponsored candidates. There are three fields of specialization in the Postgraduate studies; namely, (i) Heat Power Engineering, (ii) Production Engineering and (iii) Machine Design. The postgraduate students are mostly trained in the laboratories meant for emerging field of specialization. They are assigned suitable thesis work relating to industrial and academic problems relevant to the present day trends of technical education. The research facilities leading to Ph.D. degrees are available for scholars registered with our University. The research facilities comprise computer facilities and equipment gadgets in various laboratories in the emerging field, central library facilities and the central workshop of the University. The students and research scholars are allowed to work in the department from early morning to 8.00 pm at night.

The Departmental faculty consists of erudite teachers who are constantly engaged in undertaking research work of original nature and subsequent publications. Many of the members of the faculty have earned to their credit quite a number of praiseworthy research papers published in the national and international journals of repute.

The Department is actively engaged in solving industrial problems faced by the industries in and around Kolkata. The Department is providing design and consultancy services for installing and pollution-abating equipment for different industries in Howrah and Kolkata.

The Department organizes Seminars and workshops every year. Industrial visits are also organized.

Most of the Undergraduate students get employed in the final year of the course and many Postgraduate students get jobs before completion of their studies.

Recently, the Department has expanded with the construction of a new floor to accommodate more machines and equipment for new laboratories and for Postgraduate research works. It is germane to mention that the Mechanical Engineering Department has taken a leading role for a Boiler Emission Upgrade Project in India following the MOU signed between Bengal Engineering College (D.U.) and a consortium of Daltech, Dalhousie University & Greenfield research Inc. of Canada under CIDA Project.
